NE: Woman, Gun, Dog, and Burglary Suspect

It happened in Omaha, Nebraska early on Tuesday morning.  Barb Hayley was home alone, with her dog, Dozer.   Her husband was traveling for work.

She awoke to go to the restroom when Dozer ran out of the bedroom, barking.    Barb found the garage door open and drawers that appeared as if someone had rifled through them.   When she heard a crash, she retrieved her husband's pistol from the nightstand.

If this is the correct timeline, it would have been better for her to retrieve the pistol when the Dozer alerted.  It is not a good idea to leave an unsecured pistol when there may be an intruder in the house.   If you find the intruder, the pistol may be worth having in hand.

The pistol appears to be a classic Sig Sauer, probably a P220 in .45ACP.

By this time Dozer had found the intruder.   All that Barb Hayley could see was a man's hands sticking out of closet, shaking.  She got his name "Jody", and threatened to shoot him.   From ketv.com:
"I said, 'Who are you?' He said, 'Jody,' whatever his last name was. I said, 'I don't know you, I will shoot you,' and I used a few choice words in there, too," said Hayley.
He never left the closet until police arrived, a little after 3 a.m.

It looks like a very nice neighborhood, a very nice woman, a very nice dog, and a very nice pistol.  But even nice neighborhoods can have burglars.   A dog and a gun are useful means of mitigating the threat of things that go bump in the night.
