A few minutes later, he heard the noise again but this time outside his own front door. When he looked through the peephole again, he saw a man standing outside.

"At that point the subject then kicked open the front door of the deputy's apartment," Deputy Thomas Gilliland with the Harris County Sheriff's Office said. "Fearing for his life, he discharged his weapon one time, we think striking the suspect."
